David Yeomans Career
Yeomans is the Chief Meteorologist for KXAN News. Being a three-time Emmy Award-winning Meteorologist, he has always been fascinated with weather. By the fourth grade, he was checking out stacks of meteorology books from the public library, gathering as much knowledge as he could. Afterward, he became a registered storm spotter and kept climate records for the National Weather Service office.
After his first year at the University of Miami, during the summer, David came back home to Austin to intern in the KXAN weather department under Jim Spencer. While in his college career, he also held internships in Austin at Spectrum News and CBS4 Miami. He was a published undergraduate researcher under world-renowned climate change expert, Dr. Brian Soden, studying the relationship between water vapor in the high levels of the atmosphere and global warming.
In the year 2010, Yeomans went back to the University of Miami for graduate studies in meteorology. While in his graduate school, he was involved in campus broadcasting programs giving a daily weather forecast on WVUM radio, ranked as the No. 1 college radio station by the MTV-U Woodie Awards. David also worked for the campus TV station’s award-winning half-hour news show, NewVision as the lead weather anchor.
For his Masters thesis David researched hurricane formation and was a guest scientist aboard an NOAA Hurricane Hunter flight. He was invited at the American Meteorological Society’s annual conventions in 2012, 2013, and 2016 to present his research. He received the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal from the American Meteorological Society.
While here in Austin, he also serves on the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Advisory Council. During his free time, he enjoys mountain biking in the greenbelt and wake surfing on Lake Austin. He also volunteers with Meals on Wheels in Austin.
