Maier serves as chief meteorologist at WEAU-TV based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. In this role, he produces and anchors the 5, 6, and 10 pm weather segments as well as fills in on the 4 & 9 pm shows as needed. Moreover, he also updates and writes the website weather discussion daily and records weather app video updates.
Prior to working at WEAU-TV, he worked at WLIO-TV in Lima, Ohio where he served as the chief meteorologist. In 2009, he received the prestigious CBM certification from the American Meteorological Society. He is also an active volunteer and volunteered at Junior Achievement from November 2013 to January 2014. In January 2015, he was presented with the American Meteorological Society by a Broadcast Meteorologist.
Darren has also won several awards and honors including the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association award in 2018 & 2019 for best weathercast in small market television. Since starting his meteorology career, he has enclosed several stories including Wisconsin’s longest-track EF-3 tornado on record in May of 2017. He also covered the EF-3 Wheaton tornado in September 2019 as well as the 2018-2019 record-breaking winter.
