He developed his love for journalism at a young age. His career began in 1977 in Davenport, Iowa. He also worked in Atlanta, New Orleans, Illinois, and Quincy as a sports broadcaster.

During his working time in Atlanta, he won an Emmy award as the “Outstanding News Performer”in 1984 in the state of Georgia. From there, he worked for WABC-TV in New York for seven years from 1984 to 1991 as the primary sportscaster prior to returning to Chicago. While in New York, he worked as a a college football play-by- play reporter and announcer for “Wide World of Sports,” the sports anthology show.
