The legendary local weathercaster Dick Addis hired him as the backup. Prior to joining the WSBT 22 News weather team, he worked at WNDU-TV for seventeen years as a meteorologist.
He led the American Meteorological Society (AMS) s a meteorologist and a full Member of the Society with his rigorous training in math and science. Werner says in 1988, the highlights of his weather career are earning the AMS Seal of Approval. He also won the highest distinction given to a broadcast meteorologist in 2010, the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation.
Throughout his career job, he has covered major stories including the great blizzard of January 1978, just a few days after his first TV audition. Werner says the toughest parts of his job are dealing with the time pressure of live television. It is also tough forecasting problems presented by Michiana’s “lake-affected” weather. He educated and advises people wanting to get into broadcasting to study hard, be prepared to live on slim wages, especially at the start, and be realistic about their talent.
