Her father was an American serviceman who fell in love with a Vietnamese college student. They married and had Nguyen, a child who was given life when so many were losing theirs in the war.
She says they then fled Vietnam, crammed into a packed C-130 cargo plane. It was stepping into the unknown. Nothing was guaranteed except that turning back was not an option. And that meant leaving behind her grandparent. She also says fleeing not only saved her life but also gave her a new one, in a place called America. Therefore she grew up in Fort Worth, Texas.

Nguyen is an anchor for CBS4 News. Being an award-winning journalist her work has taken her across the globe anchoring and reporting for NBC, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC. She has interviewed countless celebrities and newsmakers from presidents to the Dalai Lama. Her work has earned her a number of accolades including an Alfred I. duPont Award, two Peabody Awards, and several Emmy Awards.
While working at WPIX in New York City as an anchor, Betty covered the terror attacks in lower Manhattan, the 2020 Presidential election, the MeToo movement, the Capital insurrection, and Governor Andrew Cuomo’s resignation. She received two Emmy Awards for “Best Morning Newscast” and “Social Media Interactivity.”
Before that, Nguyen worked for NBC News as an anchor. She joined the station in 2013 as the anchor of Early Today on NBC, First Look on MSNBC, a correspondent for the Today Show, and a fill-in anchor for Weekend Today. While there she covered the war in Syria, the Zika and Ebola outbreaks, the election of Pope Francis, the French terror attacks, the 2016 Presidential election, the death of Nelson Mandela, and the Boston Marathon bombing,.
Prior to joining NBC, Betty was the news anchor for CBS This Morning Saturday, anchored the CBS Morning News, and was an anchor and correspondent for The Early Show. While there, she covered the Royal wedding, the 2011 earthquake in Japan, the death of Osama Bin Laden, the 2010 Gulf oil spill, the 2012 Presidential election, and the Arab Spring.
Afterward, Betty took on the additional role 2012 of serving as Special Correspondent for Entertainment Tonight, reporting celebrity news and covering the People’s Choice Awards. Before joining CBS News, she served for CNN Newsroom as an anchor for the weekend edition. Nguyen began her career at the network in 2004.
Before moving to CNN, Nguyen served at KTVT-TV, the CBS affiliate in Dallas as an anchor. While there she covered numerous breaking news events, including the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. She also worked as a freelance correspondent for E! Entertainment Television during the 2003 California gubernatorial election. Betty started her career at KWTX-TV, the CBS affiliate in Waco, Texas as a morning anchor and reporter.
