During his time at the station, Phillips covered Hurricane Laura (a category 4 hurricane) and also received his NWA Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association. Before KALB, Phillips served as the Chief Meteorologist at KIDY (which is currently Fox West Texas) in San Angelo, TX. Here, Phillips experienced every type of weather condition from flash flooding, tornadoes, West Texas heat waves, extreme heat, and strong blue northers. He also got to meet and work with Dr. Steve Lyons at the National Weather Service in San Angelo.
Occasionally, his career began at KOTA-Territory News in Rapid City, South Dakota, where he was the weekend meteorologist/weekday reporter. During his tenure at the station, he handled weekend forecasts for storm systems in the Black Hills region and delivered weekday weather reports directly from the field.
