Ciara is an Emmy-winning broadcast journalist with more than 35 years of experience. Ciara covered the operations Desert Shield and Storm as well as Operation Enduring Freedom from active military locations in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Additionally, Ciara provided heartbreaking business pieces on Cubans who landed in GITMO to escape the communist regime. When the US Military came to the beaches of Haiti in response to an uprising, Ciara gave the tales of the military campaign while she was aboard the command ship USS Mount Whitney. While in the country, she covers political campaigns, does investigative reporting, and does interviews with prominent individuals like former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Oprah Winfrey.
She has provided analysis for several news outlets, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, XM Radio, National Public Radio, and the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Ciara has contributed quotes to these periodicals as well. She also wrote columns for “The Daily Press” for many years. Most recently, she served as president of UNITY and the National Association of Black Journalists, two of the biggest groups of minority journalists in the world. While serving in these capacities, she supported diversity in media, fair community coverage, and increased chances for minorities in managerial positions. Ciara was chosen by readers of “Coastal Virginia Magazine” as the best local female TV news anchor in the Hampton Roads region for the 2017 Readers’ Choice Awards.

Ciara has won numerous community and professional honors for her work on camera and in the community. Additionally, she was awarded the coveted Capitol Regional Emmy Award for her series “Guilty Til Proven Innocent”. In addition, Ciara received honors from the prestigious Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, for her reports on race and ethnicity. Her co-honorees were CBS’ Dan Rather and producers of CBS’ 60 Minutes. Ebony Magazine named her one of the “Ebony Power 150 Organization Leaders” in 2008 for her leadership role as president of the National Association of Black Journalists.
Barbara has received the 1997 Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio and Television News Directors Association, a 1997 Emmy nomination for “Operation Haiti” featuring children living in poverty on the island nation, a 1995 Emmy nomination for the series “Letters from the Hood” a gripping story documenting the lives of children who live in violent urban areas. Ciara has also been honored with numerous Associated Press and United Press International awards dating back to 1986, as well as a dozen prestigious “Excel” awards from the Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals.
Barbara Ciara KZAZ-TV
In 1976, she dropped out of college during her junior year to accept full-time employment at Tucson’s KZAZ-TV. She spent five years working in the news as a photographer, assignment editor, producer, noon anchor, and finally news director after beginning her career as an audio director and technical director in production. She was the first African-American woman and the youngest woman to hold the position of news director for a commercial television station in the Southwest at the time, in 1978. Barbara has experience working for both the NBC and ABC affiliates in the Hampton Roads region, and in February 1997, she made history by accepting the position of managing editor of LNC, a pioneering collaboration combining cable, commercial television, and the Virginian-Pilot newspaper.

She is a strong believer in public service and has worked with several non-profit organizations. In August 2007, she was elected President of the National Association of Black Journalists, the largest journalism organization of color in the world.
