Anderson Cooper’s Career

Channel One

Cooper tried to gain entry-level employment to answer telephones with ABC just after graduating from Yale, but unfortunately, it became unsuccessful for him. Cooper later decided to seek help from a friend who would make a fake press pass for him for he had found it hard to gain entrance on on-air reporting. During that time, Cooper worked as a fact checker for Channel One, which produced a youth-oriented news program that was broadcast to many high schools and junior high schools in the United States. He later joined Myanmar on his own using his forged press pass where he met with students who fought the Burmese government. Cooper was successfully able to sell to Channel One his own homemade news segments.

Cooper later resided in Vietnam for a year where he went to the University of Hanoi after reporting from Myanmar where he pursued the Vietnamese language. He began assembling reports and filming on Vietnamese life and culture for the network still pleading with them to allow him to bring a Hi8 camera with him. Cooper resumed to filming stories all over the globe on war-torn regions that included Rwanda,  Somalia, and Bosnia.

Cooper later realized that he had been desensitized due to the violence around him in the year 1994  this was after being on such assignments for a number of years.

He started working for ABC News as a correspondent in 1995 and later became a co-anchor on its overnight World News program on September 21, 1999. Cooper switched career paths and started working as a host for ABC’s reality show The Mole. During the day he worked at 20/20 and at night he anchored this newscast at ABC. It was during this duration that he would spend the most time working. This made Cooper think of resigning but yet had second thoughts.

During Philbins triple-bypass heart surgery, in the year 2007 Cooper acted as a fill-in co-host for Regis Philbin on Live with Regis and Kelly. Cooper still works as a guest co-host on Live in case one of the hosts is away.

Cooper also states that he doubts if the audience buys that anymore since he as a viewer wouldn’t buy any of that. He, later on, says that he thinks that one has to be himself by being real and admitting what they don’t know,  what they know, and also talking about what they don’t know as long as they say they don’t know. Cooper states that he loves to relate more on television to people who are real whether good or bad compared to those who he believes put some sort of persona. He gives an example of The Simpsons anchorman who he says is a perfect example of anchors who have the same problem.

Cooper reported on several crucial stories in 2005 such as the Cedar Revolution in Beirut, Lebanon; the royal wedding of Camilla Parker Bowles Prince Charles; Pope John Paul II’s death; and the tsunami damage in Sri Lanka. He reported on the Niger famine from Maradi in August 2005. Cooper confronted Reverend Jesse Jackson, Sen. Trent Lott, and Sen. Mary Landrieu during a CNN report on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the year 2005. The confrontation was about their perception of the response of the government.

CNN’s NewsNight format was changed from 60 to 120 mins in September 2005 to report on the unusually violent hurricane season. Cooper was added as co-anchor to an American journalist, Aaron Brown, for a short time, purposely for distributing some of the increased workloads. In November 2005, the 360° program expanded to 2 hours and shifted into the 10 p.m. slot, which was formerly held by “NewsNight.” Cooper was responsible for signing a multi-year deal with the network in early 2007 that allowed him to resume as a contributor to “60 Minutes”. The deal also doubled his annual salary from $2 million to a reported $4 million.

Cooper signed an agreement with Warner Bros. and Telepictures ( corporate siblings of CNN) to host a nationally syndicated talk show in September 2010. Brian Stelter who at that time worked at The New York Times stated on Twitter that the talk show was to be named  Anderson which currently goes by the name Anderson Live. Cooper signed a new multi-year contract with the network j8ust after the show had premiered on September 12, 2011. The contract was to be part of negotiations over the talk show deal, for him to continue as the host of Anderson Cooper 360°. After the show’s second season, it was announced on October 29, 2012, that the show would come to its conclusion. The show was later renamed just after its first season and now had various co-hosts. This was after the show failed to attain the distributor’s  Warner Brothers ratings. The show’s final season was later aired on May 30, 2013.

Anderson Cooper’s Parents and Siblings

Cooper was born and raised in Manhattan, New York City by his lovely parents Wyatt Emory Cooper and artist Gloria Vanderbilt. He was the youngest child. He had one brother, Carter Vanderbilt Cooper, and two half-brothers  Leopold Stanislaus “Stan” Stokowski and Christopher Stokowski. The two half-brothers were from Gloria Vanderbilt’s ten-year marriage to conductor Leopold Stokowski.  Wyatt experienced several heart attacks that led him with no other choice than to undergo open-heart surgery so as to cure him. Unfortunately, Wyatt passed on, on January 5, 1978, at the age of 50 as he was still undergoing the surgery.

Gloria later died at an age of 95 years old on June 17, 2019, at her lovely home in Manhattan due to her illness of stomach cancer. She was later buried in Staten Island, New York. at the Vanderbilt Family Cemetery beside her late son and husband in the Cooper plot. Prior to her demise, she entitled her son, Anderson Cooper, most of her entire estate valued at less than $1.5 million.

Cooper’s older brother, Carter Vanderbilt Cooper, committed suicide by jumping from the 14th-floor terrace of their penthouse apartment in  New York City. He died at an age of 23 on  July 22, 1988. After his son’s death,  Gloria Vanderbilt wrote her book “A Mother’s Story” which evolved around her son’s demise. She believed that her son’s suicide was due to a psychotic episode that was caused by salbutamol a  drug that is prescribed to asthma patients that causes an allergy. Anderson became more inspired to pursue journalism due to his brother’s suicidal case.

Cooper comes from the Vanderbilt family. He was the grandson of millionaire equestrian Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt and socialite Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt. His patrilineal great-grandfather was a business magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt. He happens to be the founder of the prominent Vanderbilt ship and railroad fortune.
