When the U.S. Army moved Mr. Hollenhorst to Dugway Proving Ground in 1969, following a tour of duty in Vietnam, he began a lifelong love affair with the Intermountain West. He relocated back to Salt Lake City in 1975 after deciding to pursue his heart rather than a practical job route. Hollenhorst started his broadcasting career in 1976 by accepting a position as a phone operator at KSL after working as a Yellow Cab driver for over a year.
He changed into a television reporter within a few months, and KSL assigned him the role of Courts Specialist. He moved from Salt Lake City to Dallas in 1980, where he spent the next two years working as a general assignment reporter for WFAA-TV. Hollenhorst served as Bonneville International Corporation’s Assistant Bureau Chief from late 1981 to 1986, covering the capital. In 1986, he went back to KSL in Salt Lake City. For the academic year 1990–1991, Mr. Hollenhorst was chosen to be a William Benton Fellow in Broadcast Journalism.
His studies at the University of Chicago during his fellowship year focused on science and history. Over the years, he has received many honors, including The National Headliners Award. He received three consecutive “Best TV Reporter” awards from the Society of Professional Journalists in Utah. John enjoys jazz music, history, science, and the natural beauty of southeast Utah. Reading, hiking, and spending time with his family are some of his favorite activities.
