Pennington started his career working for Leaving Las Vegas in 1995 where he served as a set designer. He, later on, started working at The Learning Channel (TLC) on a show called Trading Spaces where he was a designer and carpenter. Later on, in 2003, he began working as an actor in the role of “Wilbur Wright” The Adventures of Ociee Nash. Pennington was selected as the leader of the eight-person design team by ABC for a show that renovated homes in seven days or less.
Pennington also worked as a carpenter and designer for the HGTV show called Extreme Makeover Home Edition which ended in 2012. He moved to New York City where he began working on a lifestyle-based talk show called The Revolution which premiered on January 2012 on ABC. However, the show was canceled six months after its premiere leaving Ty to explore other fields.
Pennington started working on his show called In January 2021, HGTV debuted Ty Breaker, a show[12] that features Pennington helping families struggling to make their homes work for their changing lives he assisted low-income families in January 2021 and renovated their homes. On March 8, 2021, Rock The Block premiered on HGTV with Pennington serving as the host for its 2nd season. In addition to that, he was also the host of Battle on the Beach which was aired on HGTV and featuring Taniya Nayak and Alison Victoria.

Pennington was among the designers that assisted the three contestants on Battle on The Beach. The three competing teams were helped by three famous renovators and designers, Alison Victoria, Taniya Nayak, and Ty Pennington. Kersh and his wife, Kerry Kersh were the winners of Battle on The Beach which was aired on HGTV. The show circled around three teams of upcoming designers competing in renovating similar beachfront houses for a $50,000 cash prize which they received.
