Weatherspoon is an anchor working for WBRZ. After serving as the news director for WJBO-AM and WFMF-FM radio in Baton Rouge, Sylvia joined the WBRZ crew. She initially pursued a career as a radio news reporter, but she became interested in the technical aspects of TV news. She worked in the local TV station’s newsroom in her free time. Sylvia claimed she liked watching television news because it came naturally to her. She found reporting for TV news to be challenging and imaginative. Sylvia is active in the community and sits on several boards, including the Executive Board of Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area, the Advisory Board of Junior League of Baton Rouge, and the Sunrise Rotary Club of Baton Rouge.
When Sylvia covered the health portions of WBRZ’s “Reduce Your Risk” series, she was given the Excellence in Medical Journalism Award in Television Broadcasting in 2007. In her career, Sylvia won two awards from the Louisiana Associated Press: second place for “In Just Minutes,” a report on a house fire, and third place for “Miracle on the Mississippi,” a report on an accident on the Mississippi River Bridge. She also received the Excellence in Television Award from Women in Media in 2007. She also received the Arthritis Association of Louisiana’s 2007 Laurie Smith Anderson Award for Excellence in Health Care Reporting.
The Baton Rouge Chapter of The Links, Inc.’s 2008 Louisiana Role Model Award, the 2008 NAACP Community Service Award, and the 2008 Best Local TV News Anchor in 225 Magazine were the most recent honors given to Sylvia. In 2011 and 2012, the Louisiana Associated Press selected WBRZ News 2 at 10 p.m. “Louisiana’s Best Newscast.”Sylvia, her husband, and their two kids all call Baton Rouge home. Her hobbies include gardening, going on family vacations, and Bible study.
