Dean was born in Burlington and spent his early school years in Raleigh before moving to Williamsburg, Virginia, where he finished high school. He enrolled at UNC Wilmington, where he pursued a business degree, graduating in 1989. His passion for weather led him to enroll at NC State University, where he pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology, graduating in 1998.

He has been with the Spectrum News Weather team since joining in November 2019, and he views weather broadcasting as his life’s passion. Previously, Dean served as a chief meteorologist at WWAY-TV in Wilmington, North Carolina. Dean began his career at WHIO-TV in January 1999, where he served as a broadcast meteorologist. In January 2003, he was promoted from Weekend Meteorologist to Weekday Morning Meteorologist.
Occasionally, Dean was part of the team that was honored with the 2000 Emmy Award for exclusive, first, live aerial coverage during the aftermath of the September 20, 2000, Xenia, Ohio, F4 tornado. Additionally, he was part of the team that received the 2000, 2003, 2005, and 2006 Associated Press Award for Outstanding Weather Operation in the states of Ohio and West Virginia. From WHIO-TV, Dean moved to Durham, NC, where he joined ABC 11 Eyewitness News, WTVD, where he joined as a weekend evening and fill-in chief meteorologist. While in Durham, Dean reported on site during hurricanes Earl, Irene, and Sandy, which caused a lot of damage to the Mid-Atlantic coast in 2012.
He also delivered essential, life-saving updates during 5-hour uninterrupted live coverage of the catastrophic April 16, 2011, tornado outbreak in North Carolina. His standout coverage came during Hurricane Florence in September 2018, when his team delivered over 83 hours of nonstop reporting as the storm produced historic flooding in southeast North Carolina. When he isn’t reporting on the weather, Dean can be found fishing, enjoying eastern-style North Carolina BBQ, and golfing. He is also an avid member of the American Meteorological Society and holds the AMS Broadcasting Seal
