Ryan Stinnett Education

Stinnett is a proud graduate of the University of South Alabama where he was privileged to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in Meteorology. There, he studied between 2003 and 2007. Later on, he went on to join Mississippi State University where he studied between 2009 and 2011. There, he obtained a Master of Science Degree in Meteorology. It was during his time in the South that he fell in love with the City of Mobile, the culture of the area(especially Mardi Gras), and loves the South Alabama beaches.

During his time at State, he was part of the 3-time National Champion Forecasting team. Then, he was working along with the team championship. He also continued into a 64-person bracket of the top forecasters from the contest. This eventually led to winning the tournament championship.

Stinnett works for WPMI-TV/NBC 15 News where he serves the station as a Weather Forecaster. He joined the station after traveling down Interstate 65 from Montgomery. There, he was working for the Alabama News Network(CBS 8/ABC 32 News) for about eight years. There, he covered tropical systems, multiple severe weather events, and a few winter weather events.

During his time in college, he experienced many hurricanes which include Hurricane Ivan in the year 2004. Asides from this, he experienced multiple storms during the very active hurricane season of 2005. These included storms Katrina, Rita, Arlene, and Cindy Dennis. This provided him with a first-hand account of the power of the storms and the destruction that accompanies them. In his time in South Alabama, he ventured to the Great Plains for storm chasing.

Asides from this, during his time in college in the South, he interned with Alan Sealls and credits the internship with helping define his style of weather delivery and communication. He states that he always told Alan he would work with him someday. When the opportunity presented itself, it was a no-brainer to return to the Gulf Coast and join Alan’s team. For him, this was a dream come true.

Stinnett has also bitten faculty and staff members from MIT, Penn State, and the University of Georgia. This made him the top forecaster for the 2010-2011 school year. Asides from this during his time at State, Mother Nature provided abundant opportunities in order to chase storms in the Twin States. These include the deadly and destructive tornado outbreak of the 27th of April 2011.

Stinnett holds a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal(CBM) from the American Meteorological Society(AMS). He is also a member of the National Weather Association(NWA). He states that he is happy to be back in Mobile, making it his forever home. Asides from this, he loves being involved in the community and looks forward to engaging with his viewers. His passion has always been weather and states that he will talk about it with anyone and is readily available for weather talks. This includes in churches, businesses, civic organizations, and schools.
