DeMello serves KHON as the sports director. He joined the station in 2010. Further, he has served the station for more than a decade. Moreover, he has served as a sportscaster in Honolulu since 2003. When he was 15, he served under current ESPN SportsCenter anchor Neil Everett as an intern. Additionally, he serves as the creator, executive producer, and host of “Cover 2: Hawaii High School Football Weekly.” The show telecasts on Thursdays at 9 p.m. during football season featuring the prestigious player of the year awards that are acknowledged nationwide.
For instance, the Marcus Mariota Player of the Year Award was selected by a special Cover2 panel and the Mariota family. Also, he serves as a host of the Bows Football Final podcast during the UH Football season. He went to broadcast Hawaii’s biggest sports stories like Manti Te‘o’s 2012 college football national championship game, Marcus Mariota, and Tua Tagovailoa’s Heisman Trophy ceremonies in New York City. To boot, he broadcasted the Rainbow Warrior basketball team’s memorable three-week March Madness run in 2016 and the UH Men’s volleyball team’s initial national championship in 2021.
Else his close links with Hawaii athletes gave him the chance to break exclusive stories. For instance, star prep player, Tua Tagovailoa’s dedication to the University of Alabama, and stories with Max Holloway, Marcus Mariota, and numerous others used nationally.
