Cowan ended his marriage and reunited with Abplanalp after three years. They got married on September 4, 2013, in Laguna Beach. Later they adopted three children. the couple sustained so many Utah gay couples getting marriage licenses at the Washington County Clerk’s office on December 23, 2013.

Cowan works for KPIX 5 as their 3 pm Anchor, Reporter, and Executive Producer of Community Impact. When he was still in high school reporting sports scores from the sidelines he started his career in radio more than 30 years ago. He graduated from Utah State University where he was the first college student put on the air in Salt Lake City to report the breaking news of wildfires in Utah’s west desert.
He was Utah’s first LGBTQ anchor and one of the lead reporters on the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping case, a story he broke on our morning show on that horrible day. Cowan was the reporter who made national news for being paged by his four-year-old son, Wesley. In Miami, he found himself reporting live for CNN and Studio B with Shepard Smith and traveling to report the stories of people swept up in Haiti’s natural disasters.
For his hours-long live coverage of the night of the Las Vegas Route 91 Harvest Festival mass shooting he was honored with Emmys and an Edward R. Murrow award. He was a national reporter reporting Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, Rio de Janeiro, and Pyeongchang.
Also, he’s a documentarian, having directed, written, and produced two films that have been screened at film festivals around the world, including the Sundance Film Festival for a film shot in San Francisco with the Oscar-winning writer of MILK, Dustin Lance Black. He almost graduated with a Master’s Degree from Harvard University, where he will work constantly to be a better writer.
