Harvey is a news anchor for CBS-KCAL News at 5, 6, 9, and 11 pm broadcasts. She joined the station after 20 years of working with sister station KCAL9 where she served as one of the original anchors of the nation’s first nightly three-hour newscast. The Los Angeles City Council and LA County Board of Supervisors declared October 30th, 2009, “Pat Harvey” by proclamation in recognition of her 20th anniversary with KCAL and contributions to the people of Southern California.

In 2015 the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded Pat with the prestigious LA Area Governor’s Award for her body of work at CBS2/KCAL9 and philanthropic work in the community. She was then inducted into the National Black Journalists Hall of Fame in Washington, DC. in the year 2012. Harvey has appeared nationally as a guest co-host on the CBS Television Network daytime show, The Talk in addition to her anchoring duties.

Harvey has covered some of the presidential inaugurations, the biggest local news stories, and political conventions, and has traveled internationally. She reported on the Aids epidemic in Eastern Africa and Russia, the historic first all-race elections in South Africa, and the civil war in El, Salvador. Pat followed the works of a homeless painter in Los Angeles to the galleries of Paris and covered the installation of Pope Benedict XVI in Rome.

Pat interviewed the Grammy award-winning rap artist Nipsy Hussle, in 2019 a month before he was gunned down. She also covered the 1992 Los Angeles riots and the death of George Floyd in 2020. She started her career as a general assignment reporter and later produced and anchored the 6 and 11 pm newscasts at WNEM-TV in Saginaw, Michigan.

Career

Harvey helped launch CNN Headline News in 1981 and after a year she was named co-anchor of CNN’s Daybreak program. Prior to joining KCAL, she worked for Chicago’s superstation WGN-TV as an anchor and reporter. While there, Pat’s series of investigative reports on faulty pap smears lead to new health legislation in Illinois shut down a lab responsible for many of those defective smears in Tarzana, California. She was also named to the Governor’s Task Force on Education.

Throughout her broadcast career, Pat has won 25 Emmy Awards, including three for Best Newscast. She is the recipient of two other lifetime achievement awards, which include the Golden Mike from the Radio & Television News Association and the LA Press Club’s Joseph M. Quinn award. She has dedicated her career to community service, advocating for victims of domestic violence, children, breast cancer, education, and the special needs community.

Harvey is the recipient of two honorary doctorate degrees in the Humanities from American Intercontinental University and Mt. St. Mary’s University in Brentwood, California, and was awarded the NAACP’s Ida B. Wells Award and the Silver Star Award from the YMCA.
