Wankum works for WCVB Channel 5 as a weatherman. For almost thirty years, he has been forecasting weather in Boston. Before that, he worked at Boston’s WLVI as chief meteorologist for 13 years. At WTVR in Richmond, Virginia he was chief meteorologist, and also at KTIV in Sioux City, Iowa.
He has earned 16 regional Emmy Awards for both weather coverage and technology reporting. Wankum has been recognized with many Associated Press and Massachusetts Broadcasters Association (MBA) awards, including “Coolest” meteorologists in the country in 2017 and a First Place MBA Sound Bites award in 2018.
He has spoken on a variety of topics including media, children’s issues, climate change, severe weather, and nuclear disasters. He worked as past Chairman of the Chornobyl Children Project USA. Wankum graduated from Briar Cliff University and at Creighton University, he worked on his Masters in Atmospheric Science.
