Prior to joining KPTV, Nelsen served as a weekend and weekday evening meteorologist at KOIN-TV (1993–2000) in Portland, Oregon. Before that, he gained newsroom experience producing forecasts for windsurfers and skiers (1991–1994) in the Columbia River Gorge and Mt. Hood, while also maintaining technical systems.
