Porter is a reporter during the week and an anchor over the weekend. She had always known she wanted to tell stories. She began her journalism career at KCWY in Casper, Wyoming. Living in the state with the lowest population in the United States, I was able to make up for it with the spectacular beauty of the Mountain West. When Marella experienced her first Wyoming snow at the end of May, she rapidly understood the true meaning of wind cold. She made the ideal time to relocate to Casper.
It was in the totality zone for the 2017 complete solar eclipse. She was able to cover the once-in-a-lifetime event when millions of visitors from all over the world descended upon Wyoming to witness the state and the city go dark! From Mobile, Alabama, where Mardi Gras first took hold, Marella travels to Cincinnati. She covered the most active hurricane season on record when she was in the Deep South, with many of the storms aiming for the Gulf Coast in 2020. While working at WALA, she covered the pandemic’s historic suspension of the carnival season, which resulted in the first suspension of parades in Port City since the 1940s.
Witnessing the late Congressman John Lewis’ life come full circle was one of her favorite memories. She had the honor of reporting from Montgomery, where hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects to the civil rights icon as his casket lay in the Alabama State Capitol before being taken to Washington, D.C., making Lewis the first Black lawmaker to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, just hours after his casket was transported by horse-drawn carriage over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the scene of “Bloody Sunday,” by her. Marella is eager to discover as much as she can about the Tri-State, to share what is important to the neighborhood, and to create lifelong memories.
