Ming works as a consumer investigative reporter and anchors CBS13 News at 4 and 5:30 p.m. Before beginning the “Call Kurtis” consumer advocacy program which has assisted viewers to get back millions of dollars and resolve thousands of disputes since 2006, he held the position of general assignment reporter and weekend anchor.
He’s covered everything from the Scott Peterson murder trial to the gubernatorial campaign of a porn star since he started working in Sacramento. He has revealed problems in state and local government resulting in the passing of new laws and investigation of unscrupulous businesses. From Pakistan, he reported on terrorism, traveled to Mexico to assist viewers with a timeshare refund, and tensions between North and South Korea from the DMZ.
From an assignment on the Gulf Coast, he has reported Hurricane Katrina to trips to the shores of Phuket, Thailand, the tsunamis that affected each of those countries, natural disasters, and Samoa tracking progress. He experienced a major earthquake in New Zealand, Christchurch, and found himself reporting for a national audience back home during his international travels in September 2010.
Ming a 42-time regional Emmy Award nominee got honored by the Radio and Television News Directors Association, with a California Journalism Award and The National Press Club. The state got rid of its problem-plagued doctor’s diversion program after exposing how the California Medical Board allowed doctors with drug and alcohol problems to continue treating patients. He revealed the flaw in a state website revealing the personal information of tens of thousands of unemployed Californians.
Ming was chosen by the Radio Television Digital News Foundation in 2015 to travel to Europe and meet with top-level German business, political, and media figures and visit the EU and NATO in Belgium. In 2013, he traveled with a delegation of American journalists to Pakistan as an East-West Center fellow. He graduated from the FBI’s Citizens’ Academy in 2011. He was honored as the Consumer Journalist of the Year in 2016 by the Consumer Federation of California.
His broadcast career began at WERS-FM in Boston in 1996 as a radio reporter and anchor. At Dateline NBC, KCOP-TV in Los Angeles, and KGO-TV in San Francisco he worked behind the scenes. Prior to that, he reported for KRCR-TV in Redding, California, and KTVN-TV in Reno, Nevada. from Emerson College in Boston he has a degree in broadcast journalism.
The Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989 made him realize the importance of journalists and that’s how he became one. He enjoys a good Japanese Steakhouse and loves the beauty in Northern California, the microclimates, and the fact you can be from the beach to the snow in 2-hours.
