Upon completion of his high school education, Monahan went on to join the United States Air Force Academy in 1980. Additionally, he has served the station for more than a decade. Prior to this, he served in Houston, Texas at KIAH as a chief meteorologist from June 2000 to June 2011.
For a decade, he provided coverage for the weather. Further, he served in Cheyenne, Wyoming at KGWN as a chief meteorologist. Moreover, he served in Grand Rapids at WOOD as a weekend meteorologist. Additionally, he served in Sioux Falls at KDLT as a chief meteorologist. Furthermore, he served Southwest Developmental Services, Incorporated as a human resource director.
In addition to that, he served the US Air Force as a commander from August 1988 to March 1999. In 1990, he attained a Meritorious Service Medal. Before that, he served as a special agent in charge. As a special agent in charge, he attained a USAF Achievement Medal in 1987, USAF Commendation Medal in 1988, and a Korea Defense Service Medal in 1988. To boot, he served as a counterintelligence analyst attaining a USAF Commendation Medal in 1987.

Monahan underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee in 2019. Small holes were drilled in his femur and tibia to draw stem cells into areas where cartilage has been damaged. The procedure causes less knee pain and more knee movement range. Since his orthopedic surgeon advised him to keep body weight off of the knee for at least 4 weeks so the new tissue can take hold without disturbance, he used crutches.
