On January 16, 2012, Donovan expanded his duties at WKYC as he became the anchor of channel 3’s 7 p.m. newscast. He continues in his role as sports anchor at 6 and 11 p.m. After the passing of WKYC’s weeknight sports anchor Jim Graner in 1976, the position saw frequent turnover, with six replacements taking the role over the next decade. Among these were Don Schroeder, Tom Ryther, Joe Pelligrino, Jim Mueller, and Wayland Boot.

However, in 1986, Donovan, who had joined the station in 1985 as the weekend sports anchor, assumed the position and has remained in it ever since. In 2006, WKYC and SportsTime Ohio, now rebranded as Bally Sports Great Lakes (BSGL), obtained the local TV rights to the Cleveland Browns. This led to Donovan taking on additional responsibilities as he now hosts several Browns-themed programs on BSGL alongside his duties on WKYC.

Jim Donovan NBC Sports

Donovan served as the play-by-play announcer for NBC Sports’ NFL coverage from 1987 to 1997. He also provided commentary for swimming and soccer events during the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics, as well as for the World Cup Soccer in 1994.

Upon the return of the Cleveland Browns to the NFL in 1999, Donovan was appointed as the team’s radio play-by-play voice. Between 2006 and 2008, Donovan served as the play-by-play announcer for the Cleveland Indians when WKYC acquired the local television rights to broadcast their games.

During the 11 pm newscast on May 25, 2011, Donovan revealed his ten-year battle with leukemia and his upcoming leave of absence for a successful bone marrow transplant. After returning on September 11, 2011. Donovan resumed his roles in the Browns broadcasting booth, sports anchor chair at WKYC, and hosting duties on STO. In a heartfelt moment on Thanksgiving night in 2013, Donovan met his bone marrow donor, Dallas Gentry, from Wise, Virginia.

Unfortunately, on May 31, 2023, Donovan shared that his leukemia had relapsed, prompting him to undergo treatment once again. Following his broadcast of the opening game of the 2023 season for the Browns on September 10. Donovan announced his decision to step away from announcing Browns games to focus on leukemia treatment.
