Layer serves DC News Now Washington as a meteorologist. She joined the DC News Now team in May 2022. Prior to this, she served in Boston at WHDH as a meteorologist on weekend mornings. Further, she has encountered forecasting nor’easters and bitterly cold wind chills in the winter, drastic weather, and tropical storms in the summer.
Aside from her day-to-day weather duties, she traveled to local schools to endorse fun ways to learn about weather with a strong concentration on being prepared when drastic weather strikes. During the pandemic, she began a daily weather lesson/experiment series that assisted families that struggled to find methods to teach science outside of the classroom when schools transitioned virtually.
Before WHDH, she served as a weekend morning meteorologist at WBTS-TV (NBC) and NECN in Boston. Nonetheless, she debuted her career when she served WBND-TV (ABC) in South Bend, Indiana. Throughout her time there, she pursued lake effect snow off Lake Michigan and windchills that dipped 40-below zero in the winter after heatwaves and tornado outbreaks in the summer.
Additionally, she attained her Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation from the American Meteorological Society (AMS). Moreover, she ascribes the Blizzard of ’96 which brought over 30′′of snow to parts of the northeast for igniting her interest in the weather at a young age. Also, she ascribes a family trip to Florida when Hurricane Charley impacted in 2004.
When she is not working, she enjoys traveling, spending time outdoors, and capturing nice sunrise or sunset photo. In addition to that, she loves watching baseball, football (uniquely Nittany Lions), and hockey. Else, she is competitive.
