Harvey Leonard is an American Meteorologist working for WCVB as a Chief Meteorologist Emeritus. He joined the station in 2002.

Harvey Leonard Career

Leonard is a Chief Meteorologist Emeritus working for WCVB Channel 5. In May 2022, he withdrew from the helm of StormTeam 5 and moved into his emeritus role after a fifty-year career in meteorology, with more than forty-five of those years predicting weather in New England and twenty of those at WCVB.

He continues to work for the community with important information as a periodic contributor to StormTeam 5 reports and engages in community speaking appearances. When he was joining the station, he joined with his longtime friend Dick Albert who withdrew in 2009.

Before joining the station, he worked for Boston’s WHDH as chief meteorologist for twenty-five years. Also, he worked at WPRI in Providence, RI as chief meteorologist. He started his career at Universal Weather Services, Inc.

Leonard is involved in many local organizations including the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, for which he participates in annual fundraisers to assist in finding a cure while providing support and services for those living with the disease and their families.

He has supported the work of the primary teaching affiliate for the Boston University School of Medicine and the Boston Medical Center. Moreover, at educational seminars held by the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency and an avid supporter of the Blue Hill Weather Observatory, he has worked as a speaker.

Leonard has also worked at Harvard Business School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as an honored guest speaker. Throughout his career, he has visited and spoken to hundreds of school and adult groups.

Also, he has been a mentor to many aspiring meteorologists and today well over a dozen of his protégé serve as on-air meteorologists in markets across the country. He enjoys playing tennis, and hiking trails, particularly around Walden Pond and Woods Hole.

  • Leonard got nominated by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Boston/New England Chapter honoring fifty years of outstanding contributions to the industry for induction into the prestigious 2021 Gold Circle.

  • For his outstanding achievements and unparalleled contributions to the broadcasting industry in Massachusetts, he was inducted into the 2018 Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
  • For Lifetime Achievement he was honored with the prestigious Governor’s Award at the 2016 Boston/New England Emmys.
  • Making it the fifth time in his career the magazine’s readership bestowed him this honor, Boston Magazine in the People’s Choice category selected him as 2015’s “Best Weatherperson.”
  • The Improper Bostonian selected him as the Hub’s “favorite forecaster.”
  • He received four New England Emmy Awards for outstanding achievement in television weather casting.
