Mathews attended North Carolina State University, where he pursued a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology (1984). He is a veteran meteorologist who has worked at WFMY News 2 in Greensboro, North Carolina, as the weekend morning meteorologist for Good Morning Show. He retired from the station in May 2026 after nearly four decades. Since joining the station in 1988, Mathews was known for guiding viewers through snowstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and everyday forecasts.
A lifelong animal lover, Matthews brought that passion to WFMY’s “2 The Rescue”, a pet adoption initiative launched in 2009, which has helped more than 2,700 pets find homes. Prior to joining WFMY News, Matthews interned at WRAL-TV in Raleigh, NC, and previously worked at WWAY-TV in Wilmington, NC. In April 2011, Matthews covered live as a deadly tornado struck his hometown of Sanford, damaging his mother’s home and claiming the life of his cousin.
