Previously, he was a professional football player and was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the third round of the 1982 NFL Draft. With his height of about 5 feet 11 inches, he was a running back-kickoff returner from the University of Utah. Then, he was the first 1,000-yard rusher in Utes history. Between the years 1982 and 1985, he played for the Packers, and later on the 9th of December 1984, he ran a 97-yard kick return for a touchdown against the Chicago Bears.
Later on, after a one-year’s break and absence from the league, he came back and played two seasons for the San Francisco 49ers from 1987 to 1988. There he was primarily being used for a kickoff returner. He was a proud member of the 49ers when they won Super Bowl XXIII, beating the Cincinnati Bengals 20-16 in 1989. That is when he earned a Super Bowl ring.
Among his commitment to the Sacramento area is the covering of high school sports. According to him, high school sports should be covered in a big way, and most especially high school football in the fall. Most importantly to him, it is more than the teams and covering the games. To him, it is also about the volunteer moms and dads cooking barbecue in the concession stands, the cheerleaders, the bands, school spirit, and the fans in the stands.
Rodgers states that games are a vital part of their community and hence they are proud to cover it every week during the KCRA 3 High School Playbook coverage. Previously, he also worked with several stations such as KSBW-TV in Salinas, California, WXIA-TV in Atlanta, KMST-TV in Monterey, California, and KIRO-TV in Seattle.
