At WAPT-TV in Jackson, Mississippi, Hartman served as Chief Meteorologist before retiring on July 31, 2026, after delivering his final forecast. He held the position for four decades (1986 to 2026), guiding Central Mississippi through hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and winter storms.
Prior to WAPT-TV, Hartman had served as a meteorologist at WOLO-TV in Columbia, SC, and WSPA-TV in Spartanburg, SC. Notably, in his four decades of weather broadcasting, Hartman received several accolades including a Regional Emmy Award for his coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, an Edward R. Murrow Award for his reporting on the Yazoo City Tornado in 2010, and an Emmy nomination for his weather special segment “A Matter of Seconds”, which focused on tornado preparedness.
Hartman was also the first meteorologist to bring a Doppler radar to Mississippi TV in 2000, enhancing severe weather warnings, has received multiple awards from the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters as Best Television Meteorologist, a Lifetime Achievement Award, and was also inducted into the Mississippi Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
