Before coming to FOX59, Spehler was in Cincinnati, Ohio, working for WKRC-TV as a News Anchor/Reporter. At the time, he was coming to Indiana State often to report various news stories, such as Super Bowl XLVI and the State Fair stage collapse. Before that, he spent some years in Indianapolis, covering tornadoes, floods, and the Colts’ Super Bowl triumph in the year 2007. Spehler has also served at TV stations Dayton and Toledo.
In the year 2012, Spehler and Fox 59 team won an Emmy Award for their coverage of the explosion that occurred in the South Side. Spehler individually was given an honor of an Emmy for his series that launched in the year 2013, “Hoosier Heroes”. The series highlighted the struggles and achievements of Indiana’s brave women and men in uniform.
Again, during the 2016 election, he won another Emmy for his political reporting. This was when he had an interview with then-Governor Pence after being chosen as the Republican candidate for Vice President. Spehler’s work in Indiana has been recognized by the Indiana Associated Press and the Indiana chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
