Although Sexton was certified to teach high school, she opted to work as an anchor. She started her journalism career in 1980, when she worked as a reporter at WPSD-TV in Paducah. Sexton also worked as a bureau chief at KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau, MO, before moving to WHNT-TV in Huntsville, AL, and to KLAS-TV in Las Vegas, where she worked as a news anchor.
Her commitment in the media industry has won her several accolades, including the John Seigenthaler Award for her Forever Family series ‘Telling The Stories of Foster Children’ and the NAB Service to Children Award. The Forever Family series helped give children in the foster care system an opportunity to be in the spotlight. More than 400 children were allowed to tell their story in their own words. She was named best news anchor in Huntsville, AL, recognized as the Citizen of the Year American Heart Association in 2005, and also named Best of the Best News Personality eight times. Additionally, she was recognized as a Woman of Distinction in 1998 and has emceed the program for 20 years.
