Chuck Scarborough Career
Scarborough is an anchor and reporter working for NBC 4 New York. At WNAC-TV in Boston, Scarborough landed his first significant market anchoring position in 1972. Additionally, he was first hired to work as one half of a two-man anchor combination alongside renowned New England journalist Lee Nelson. But he quickly became the station’s only news anchor. In addition to serving as an anchor, he was asked to be the host of a weekly program called Mass Reaction. Moreover, where members of the public were welcomed to the studio to ask newsmakers and broadcasters questions. Furthermore, Scarborough concluded the newscast in his farewell appearance on WNAC-TV with a commentary in which he cited the race problem as Boston’s biggest obstacle.
A very few months later, Boston experienced racial riots as a result of a federal court ruling that Boston’s de facto racial segregation in public schools policy had to be ended. With Scarborough as its anchor, WNAC managed to outperform its rivals in the ratings for the 6 o’clock newscast despite previously being the perennial trailer among Boston’s three VHF television news broadcasts. As the lone anchor of NewsCenter 4 (later known as News 4 New York), WNBC-TV’s brand-new 5:00 PM broadcast, Scarborough joined NBC News in March 1974. He eventually rose to the position of lead anchor for the station at 6 and 11 o’clock.
In 2011, he surpassed Beutel as the English-language news anchor with the longest tenure in New York. The longest-tenured anchor in New York television history was Rafael Pineda of Spanish-language WXTV before Scarborough replaced him five years later. He occasionally appeared on the network as an NBC News correspondent throughout his first 20 years with NBC. And he frequently hosted the network’s prime-time news updates. Scarborough presided over NBC News’ overnight coverage on the day of the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. A Year in Review and Memories…Then and Now. He also co-anchored the NBC network documentary series Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow with Maria Shriver and Mary Alice Williams. Additionally, having reduced his schedule to solely covering the 6 pm, Scarborough’s 42-year tenure as a regular anchor in that time slot came to an end with the 11:00 pm show on July 14, 2017. Stefan Holt, the son of NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt, took his post at 11 o’clock. Since then, Scarborough has filled in for Holt or David Ushery on the 11:00 p.m. broadcast multiple times.
