Stephens began his tenure with KCTV5 News in October 2005, where he presently co-anchors the KCTV5 News broadcasts at 5, 6, and 10 p.m. Hailing from Nebraska, Stephens, like many in the central plains, developed a deep respect for the destructive potential of tornadoes during his upbringing. However, nothing could fully prepare him for the devastation witnessed when a massive EF-5 tornado struck Joplin, MO in May 2011, claiming 161 lives and leaving widespread destruction in its wake. Brad and his KCTV colleagues covered the aftermath, sharing the stories of both loss and survival amid the tragedy.
Returning to Joplin multiple times, Stephens documented the city’s remarkable recovery and the resilience displayed by its inhabitants in rebuilding their community. Throughout his career in news, Brad has had a front-row seat to the triumphs and trials of various communities. From witnessing the devastation of natural disasters to experiencing the exhilaration of sports victories, such as covering the Kansas City Royals’ journey to the 2014 World Series and their subsequent championship win in 2015, he has seen it all.
Brad takes pride in the impactful work done at KCTV and has received recognition for his contributions, including multiple Emmy nominations and two Emmy wins in 2016. However, he holds the 2017 NAACP Media and Journalism Award in the highest regard. Outside of work, Brad enjoys spending time outdoors, whether it’s attending Royals games, visiting local lakes, jogging, or tending to his yard.
