Upon completion of her high school education, Smith went on to join the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. Nonetheless, she got into journalism in 1994 when she served as a “one-man-band” journalist where she shot and edited all of her stories.
The Michigan Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded her the Emmy for Best On-Air Talent in 2022, 2019, and 2010. Furthermore, she has been acknowledged for her reporting on societal affairs, nonstop broadcast of breaking news happenings, missing children, and from Ground Zero on the 9/11 anniversary in 2002.
