Payton joined the team in August 2012 and has also served as a lead anchor and reporter for the Houston Texans of the NFL, the main pre- and post-game anchor for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball, as well as the host of CSN’s nightly scores and highlights show, Sportsnet Central. Before coming to Nashville, Payton worked at WNCN in Raleigh, NC, as the evening anchor. During his years at the CBS Affiliate, Payton covered politics extensively, including an assignment as the co-moderator of the 2020 North Carolina Senatorial Debate between Cal Cunningham and Thom Tillis.
Payton began his career in 1994 as a sports anchor at KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City. He worked his way up the newsroom and was later promoted to a weekend sports anchor. His most memorable moments in Salt Lake were covering the NBA finals in 1997 and ’98 and the story of Heber native Cael Sanderson as he completed his collegiate wrestling career without being defeated. He then moved to Comcast Sportsnet Mid-Atlantic in Washington, DC, in January 2005, where he worked as a sports anchor and reporter. As a sports anchor, Payton reported on the NBA, 2 MLB teams, an NHL team, 2 NFL teams, an MLS team, the WNBA, and countless college athletic programs surrounding the Washington, DC area.
Additionally, Payton worked for WHBQ-TV in Memphis as a weekend news anchor and a weekday reporter. During his tenure there, Payton won two Emmy awards and was nominated for two Edward R. Murrow awards. His most memorable moments were covering a story on sex trafficking that resulted in locating a young girl who had been missing for nearly three months, and a feature on the Memphis Veterans Administration, which helped lead to a new Accountability Act within the V.A. As a result of the disbanding of CSN Houston in 2014, Payton decided to make a transition to the news side.
