He began his career in Billings, Montana, in 1984, working as a weekend newscaster and a reporter during the week. Afterward, he relocated to Boise, Idaho, where he became the main anchor for KBCI-TV.
In Jacksonville, Phil made his mark as a weekday anchor on First Coast News at WTLV/WJXX. He co-anchored various programs, including “Good Morning Jacksonville Sunrise” and “Good Morning Jacksonville,” which aired from 5 to 7 a.m. alongside Joy Purdy. Additionally, he co-anchored the weeknight 5:30 newscast with Donna Deegan.
