Joe Birch is an American Anchor/Reporter working for WMC-TV Channel 5 as the evening weeknight anchor since May 20, 1978. He is presently the president of the Memphis Rotary Club which was chartered in 1914.

Birch loves telling stories of the people of the Mid-South on WMC, Tennessee’s very first television station. In 2014, he was inducted into the Tennessee Journalism Hall of Fame.
In 2004, the Italian-American service organization, and the Memphis Chapter of UNICO bestowed their community service award on him. At the 2008 Alzheimer’s Association of the Mid-South Gala, he played the role of honoree. After serving 12 years (2002-2014) on the Board of Trustees of his alma mater he was named “Trustee Emeritus” by the Christian Brothers University. He has won many awards for his charitable and civic endeavors. For his service to St. Peter Villa, the nursing home and rehabilitation center, he received the 2008 St. Peter the Rock Award.
The Memphis Gridiron Show, Inc. named him “Newsmaker of the Year” in 2009. For his marathon of service on Action News 5, he was named to the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle in 2009. Birch was named a “Hero Among Us” for twenty consecutive years of participation in the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend by the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in December 2021. He was made the 14th recipient of the Maurelian Medal, CBU’s highest award in 2018 by Christian Brothers University, or service to the university or community.
Birch is the race director and co-founder of a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency that serves children and families in 38126, what is now the Orion 5K Run-Walk for St. Patrick Community Outreach, Inc., and the city’s most impoverished zip code. He visited New York City in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks to deliver the $527,000 Action News 5 collected to assist the agencies and people they serve and the United Way of New York City.
