Steve Johnson is an American Anchor/Reporter working for WHNT/Channel 19 News in Huntsville, Alabama as a Morning News Anchor since October 2006. He joined the station in May 1996 serving as a Sports Anchor.

Johnson was born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, United States to loving and caring parents. He states that his parents and brother are all natives of the Tarheel state. Steve further states that they moved to Huntsville when he was in the third grade because his father got a job with the Army Missile Command a Redstone Arsenal.
Johnson was raised during the heyday of the work developing America’s first missiles and the Saturn 5 program at Marshall Space Flight Center. His best memory is the way the whole town shook when they tested the Saturn 5’s main engines in the mid-60s.

Johnson attended Huntsville High School before he moved to Auburn. He went on to join Auburn University where he studied between 1969 and 1973. There, he was majoring in Journalism but obtained minors in Speech, History, and English. Later on, after his graduation, he went on to work in Anniston at a small TV station that no longer exists, WHMA.

Johnson works with WHNT News where he serves the station as a Morning News Anchor. The month of May year 1977 saw his family move back to Rocket City where he took a job as a Sports Director at the then, Action News 19. In late 1999, he began making a transition from sports to the news while working for WHNT News 19. Johnson has been a Senior Reporter and Special Assignments Reporter and is now co-anchoring the weekday morning news.
Asides from this, he also does “Leadership Perspectives” interviews which are posted on WHNT.com. This program is every Friday and can also be seen on Sunday morning news. He also does “Defending America” reports which highlight the work in the north Alabama aerospace and defense community. This is in addition to covering what happens at Redstone Arsenal both in defense and at Marshall Space Flight Center.
Away from work, he enjoys riding his bike on the streets, and roads of North Alabama. He also collects first-edition books, and his wife and are modest collectors of arts most especially by local artists. Johnson states that he may be from North Carolina and his wife from Atlanta and they both consider Huntsville as their hometown.
