Hayes works with WHNT News 19 where she was serving the station as a News Anchor and reporter. The year 2022 marked his 43rd year working for WHNT News 19 after joining the station in 1979. After his graduation, he got an internship to work for WTVF, a CBS affiliate station in Nashville. After his graduation, he was hired as a chief videotape editor in the News Department.
During the fall of the year 1978, he made a move to Huntsville. He was then hired by WHNT where he was serving the station as a reporter. After a couple of weeks, he began producing and anchoring the weekend newscasts. Late on after working as a 10 o’clock and then noon anchor. He made a move to the 6 and 10 main anchor spots in the month of November year 1983. Later on, after the tornadoes of April 27th, 2011, he kick-started anchoring a newscast at 6:30 PM.
During the fall of 2016, he also wanted a change from anchoring the late newscast for more than 30 years. He is now working as a co-anchor for the 4 and 6:30 newscast on a weeknight with Christine Killimayer. Jerry not only shares the anchor desk but also sits next to each other in the newsroom. He states that there is never a dull moment.
He has literally been around the world gathering stories for WHNT News 19. Hayes has reported from the White House and brought stories home from as far away as St. Petersburgh, Russia. Asides from this, he has interviewed celebrities such as Carol Burnett and Mark Hamill. Among his favorite memories include interviewing and getting to know the boys in the band from Fort Payne.
Hayes was later named the first television reporter to interview members of the group Alabama and loves country music. Between 2008 and 2010, he was invited to be a guest announcer during a live portion of the Grand Ole Opry.
Jerry was also thrilled to be a part of the radio show that listened to with his great-grandfather on Saturday nights. Away from work, she enjoys spending time with her family, mostly because he is now a grandfather. Asides from this, he loves playing golf, watching his Tennessee Titans and Nashville Predators, and fishing.

In the course of his career, he has been honored with numerous awards during his journalistic career. He happens to be a nine-time Emmy nominee and a two-time Emmy Award winner. The year 2010 saw him being inducted by the Nashville/Midsouth Chapter into the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Silver Circle. There, the inductees are honored for their contributions to the television industry for about 25 years or more in broadcasting.
Hayes was also recognized with the Associated Press Television Award for Best News Anchor in Alabama in 2005, 2006, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. Asides from this, he was recognized by the Alabama Broadcasters Association. This presented Jerry its Abby Award for News Anchor of the Year in the years 2008, 2011, and 2013. The year 2012 saw him win an Abby Award for a feature story called “A Father’s Love.” Asides from this, he was honored with a Region 12 Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Sports Reporting in 2013.
